The government is planning to mandate Battery Energy Storage Systems for renewable energy projects to address the intermittency issues associated with solar and wind power, ensuring stable, reliable, and continuous energy supply during peak power demand. With the falling prices of batteries which are expected to go further south in upcoming years, the introduction of this mandate is justified as it becomes economically viable, with recent tenders for solar, wind, and battery projects offering better rates than coal plants. Introducing this mandate will boost the adoption of BESS, accelerating the transition to renewable energy, enhancing grid stability, and supporting India’s energy security and sustainability goals. The mandate presents opportunities for battery manufacturers, energy storage technology and infrastructure developers, offering them a growing market as the demand for storage solutions in RE projects increases and also for utilities to get RE through BESS during peak demand.
