ArcelorMittal Olaberria Mill Adopts Green Hydrogen Heating in Spain

ArcelorMittal has begun using a green hydrogen system to heat its Olaberria rolling mill in Spain, replacing natural gas furnaces. Designed and installed by Sarralle, the system heats recycled scrap steel for shaping into beams and construction products, significantly reducing carbon emissions. While the company remains cautious about using hydrogen for primary iron production due to high costs, experts see this as a practical, high-temperature decarbonization step, demonstrating that cleaner industrial processes are feasible with current technology.
