Reliance to Launch Battery Gigafactory Operations by 2026 Insight

Reliance Industries Ltd. plans to launch its Battery Gigafactory in Jamnagar, Gujarat, by mid-2026, aiming to drive India’s Green Energy transition. The factory will initially focus on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and expand into cell manufacturing and battery chemicals. Supported by a government incentive scheme, Reliance also plans to advance Sodium-ion Battery Technology.

Reliance plans to launch a battery gigafactory to meet India’s renewable energy demand for RTC supply of electricity when integrated into BESS. Initially focusing on battery assembling, the company plans to expand into cell manufacturing and the production of battery chemicals which will increase local investment in this sector. India currently imports BESS from China which imposes security risk but the local production of BESS could help solve this problem. With the company investing in sodium-ion battery technology, if successful, this technological advancement will help India cut down its critical mineral imports and make RE integration with BESS an economically viable option. Expansion of this factory will enable it to meet domestic as well as global demand through export. This project opens opportunity for C&I consumers and DISCOMs to procure domestically assembled BESS at relatively lower cost so at to integrate it with RE.
