MSEDCL Seeks Approval for 3,000 MW Energy Storage Insight

Last Update 16 October 2024

MSEDCL sought approval for a competitive bidding process to secure 3,000 MW of Energy Storage, with an option for 2,000 MW, primarily from Pumped Hydro Storage. With peak demand projected to rise from 25,000 MW in 2024-25 to 42,000 MW by 2033-34, the approved tariffs range from ₹6.77 to ₹6.80 per unit, ensuring cost-effective energy management.

News Insights

MSEDCL is investing in energy storage projects as the peak power demand of the state is expected to experience rise of 17 GW in the coming ten years and RE will not be sufficient to meet its demand. These sources are not consistently available throughout the day, and storage solutions are necessary to ensure that surplus energy generated during non-peak hours can be stored and used during peak demand times. MSEDCL aims to exploit the vast potential of hydro power in the state and develop PSP for RTC supply of electricity as BESS seem to offer only short duration storage solutions but PSPs provide storage for longer duration which is necessary for power hungry country like India. The tariff discovered is reasonable and will help MSEDCL procure RE at peak demand for 40 years at low cost through this project. This project aligns with India’s goal to increase its RE capacity and reduce dependence on fossil generated electricity.
