The EIB will assist Bulgaria's NEK in building two pumped storage hydropower plants, Batak and Dospat, operational by 2032. Each plant will add 800 MW capacity, enhancing grid flexibility with 24/7 management, rapid emergency capacity replacement & balancing services. Costs for each plant are estimated at €900m with EIB advising on technical and economic feasibility for strategic decision-making.
